I discovered this book off of Goodreads. The author essentially posted a comment on a one star review of Sally's Thorne's "The Hating Game." She essentially further shamed a fellow author while simultaneously and shamelessly advertising her book, which made me think, "Wow, this chick has got guts. Her writing must be incredible." Well... it fell flat. Maybe I had such high expectations. Either way, it didn't hit the mark for me.
Eloise’s last name in Arabic (Asʻad) means happiest or luckiest, which she considers to be “one of the great cosmic jokes of [her] life”. Her father died when she was sixteen, and she died three years later at the fangs of a vampire. Now she’s a hired hunter of monsters, including vampires like herself.
But this is a time where such monsters prey on the “weak” victims of climate change seeking refuge on higher ground (in this case, Colorado), and Eloise, in spite of her lust for blood, still has a moral compass. Plus, she doesn’t mind fighting as a witch alongside Julian, her best friend’s brother who she’s been crushing on since she was little. He’s engaged to another woman, but he makes Eloise drink his blood when she has need of it. Talk about romantic tension.
These pages are filled with fast-paced and unpredictable action, which is sometimes bloody-gross, sometimes trippy, and sometimes just plain bada#$. Plus it’s super fun, with a diverse cast of fantastical and human characters that is sure to spark discussions of “So-and-so was my favorite!” I love Vix, Brooklyn, and Baruch, and...I could go on. But I LOVE-LOVE Eloise. She is a fierce and awesome protagonist.
I feel like it’s a current thing to dismiss all vampire novels, maybe because there was a period of reeling from a vampire junk literature overdose after a certain teen saga, but Bloodshade of the Goddess should not be dismissed, but devoured. It's pretty devourable. This is gourmet vampire literature, folks.
This is a very well written book. Every book of hers the she has written have all been great and I cannot wait to read the next.
Another great hit from Melissa Stacy! Her writing style is so descriptive and engaging--you feel like you are right there with the characters, understanding what they are thinking and feeling throughout the book. Love the strong female lead character, Eloise, and her tiny sidekick Vix! This book has everything--lots of good action, a love sub-plot, and wit throughout. Curl up with some honey buns and enjoy!
